Read by flashlight (booklight)

Review:

The Passenger: A Novel - F.R. Tallis

This is why I chose to read this book (from the book flap):

The new supernatural thrill from F.R. Tallis, who takes his readers under the wartime seas of the stormy north Atlantic in 1941. Where not all those on board are invited...

... disturbing things start happening on the boat. It seems that a lethal, supernatural force is stalking the crew, wrestling with Lorenz for control. Far under the dark, icy waves, it doesn't matter how loud you scream...

Lorenz is the captain of a U-330 Nazi submarine. He doesn't believe in the war and is kind of a maverick who only follows the rules when he must. An unexpected event leads to a death on the sub. The crew is generally superstitious to start with and this doesn't help. Afterwards, strange events begin happening that some attribute to ghostly intervention.

Granted, being on a sub and sinking towards the bottom would be incredibly frightening. I would never want to travel on a sub in the best conditions and the conditions of war are far from ideal. But, I was looking to be scared by supernatural things, not realistic things. The book is well written and interesting, but it wasn't scary. I read it quickly, mostly because I wanted to get through it.

Creepy, twisty whodunit...

Review:

The Woman in Cabin 10 - Helen Ruth Elizabeth Ware

Not only do we not know who killed the girl, but we don't know if a girl was actually killed and who in the world she might be. Our narrator is completely unreliable, she doesn't know who to trust, or if she can even trust herself. There are plenty of suspects, but no evidence.

Reading this book brought with it a lot of claustrophobic feelings. Being trapped on this small, but luxurious cruise ship was anything but relaxing for Lo. Before the trip, an intruder attacks her in her own house. She suffers from anxiety for which she takes medication. All of this contributes to her agitated state of mind on the cruise and gives others reason to doubt the validity of her claims.

I was anxious to find out the truth and had a hard time putting this one down.

I read this for the Locked Room Mystery square.

Reading progress update: I've read 47%.

The Woman in Cabin 10 - Helen Ruth Elizabeth Ware

I wanted to put that I am feeling claustrophobic, but it's not an option. Of course feeling "cyclop" is, so there's that...

Anyway, I am loving this book.  And I have no idea what exactly is going on...

Chapter 5 -

Airports say work and security checks and delays. Ports say ... I don't know. Something completely different. Escape, maybe.

Chapter 14 -

"You think, just because of a handful of pills, I'm a paranoid nutjob who can't tell fact from fiction?"

You could say that things are going downhill for our heroine, of course, things didn't really start off great either.

I'm thinking of using this for my "Locked Room Mystery" square. Most of the book takes place on a private cruise ship with only 10 rooms. There may have been a murder, but no one is missing...

Finished:

Witches:  The Witch of Blackbird Pond

Free Space: Masque of the Red Death  & Dance of the Red Death

Pumpkin:  Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Young Adult Horror:  Catacomb

This is fun, even though I'm not exactly focusing on finishing a bingo. (Oops. I guess I can chalk that up to my fickle reading moods...)

So-so third book

Review:

Catacomb - Madeleine Roux

Dan, Abby & Jordan are headed to New Orleans to drop Jordan off with his uncle. It's a cross-country road trip as kind of "their last hurrah" before they all go to college. Of course, Dan is still trying to figure out his past and he is plagued by spooky messages. They are also being followed, and someone is photographing them...

So, I think this is the final book in the Asylum trilogy (not counting all the novellas from the same world). I read the first two books a while ago and I don't remember many details from them. I glanced at my reviews and that helped a bit. I loved the first two, but this one was a bit disappointing - I didn't get the creepiness. It does wrap up a few mysteries about Dan's past.

I don't know what else to say, I guess this one was just meh.

I read this for the young adult square.

Listened to this last night...

Review:

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Washington Irving

I listened to this last night. I've seen and heard things related to this story but I never actually read the original. This is narrated by Tom Mison, the star of the Sleepy Hollow tv show (which I love). His voice is perfect and I found myself picturing his character at times.

This was a bit funny and not very spooky, but I am glad I can finally check this off the list. It was fun to listen to, and I will be able to cover my "Pumpkin" square with this one. :)

Reimagining of Poe's Story

Review:

Dance of the Red Death - Bethany Griffin

Sometimes I feel like the world is waiting for all of us to fall ill. For all of us to fade and die.

- Chapter 3

This is the second book after  Masque of the Red Death. I finished it quickly. It was a good book, but nothing special. The ending was satisfying and there was plenty of action and suspense.

I read Masque of the Red Death and Dance of the Red Death as if they were one book for my free space in Halloween Bingo. Honestly, it probably should have been one book, but maybe that would be too imposing (at around 600 pages) for its intended audience.

Review:

Masque of the Red Death - Bethany Griffin

No matter what creatures people fear in the dead of night, in this city, violence is more likely to be carried out by men.

- Chapter 3

Violence is mindless. It doesn't listen to reason.

- Chapter 9

Everything is in ruins. A plague decimated the population. Those who are still alive, live in fear of catching the plague. Masks that protect people from catching it are terribly expensive and most people can't afford them. Whoever controls the masks, controls the city. Araby's father invented the masks, but now Prince Prospero controls their manufacture. There are forces in the city that want to change that. Araby goes from living her life trying to avoid reality and the pain of losing her brother to being involved with dangerous forces of rebellion. Araby doesn't know who to trust; even her father has not told her the whole truth. And now, there is a worse sickness, the Red Death.

This book is good, and I am reading the sequel now. I have to say that I think it should have been one book. The end of the first book didn't really solve anything at all. So, while I am counting these for my Halloween Bingo, I am waiting to finish the second book before I mark the square.

Final book in an amazing series!

Review:

Morning Star: Book III of The Red Rising Trilogy - Pierce Brown

Government is never the solution, but it is almost always the problem.

- Chapter 21

The Reaper has come. And he's brought hell with him.

- Chapter 48

Everything grand is made from a series of ugly little moments. Everything worthwhile by hours of self-doubt and days of drudgery. All the works by people you and I admire sit atop a foundation of failures.

- Acknowledgements

This is a wonderful ending to an amazing series. I couldn't wait to see what would happen, but I didn't want it to end. At one point I was so upset by an event that I wanted to scream. That's a sign of a great book!

If you enjoy reading, adventure, sci-fi, or pretty much any amazing story, try this series.
