Booklikes-opoly 5/7 roll

So... I landed on GO, which is a free space - read any book! Now I just have to decide which one. Oooh I know. I'm going to read The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I have been meaning to read this one for a while, and now it's a series on HULU. So, I must read the book first!

Twilight Eyes - review

Review:

Twilight Eyes - Dean Koontz

When one day ends, the next begins, for in this infinite universe there is no final conclusion to anything, definitely not to hope.

Chapter 1 - The Carnival

You travel light when you're wanted for murder. The only heavy things you carry are memories, fear, and loneliness.

Chapter 4 - Goblin Dreams

I really enjoyed this book. The main character, Slim, has a psychic skill. But, he can't move things with his mind, heal people, or read minds. He sees the demon hiding inside people. And not metaphorically. He calls them Goblins and they can shape-shift into normal looking human beings. And no one else can see the goblin side when they are disguised as humans. Slim knows they are evil and delight in causing suffering, but that is all he knows. Oh, and he is good at killing them. Of course, once they're dead, they return to human form, so no one would believe him even if he told them. He finds sanctuary in carnivals and the people there accept him as a drifter. But the Sombra Brothers Carnival changes his life.

I liked getting to know Slim and all the carnies. I felt for him, being so alone and not trusting that anyone else would understand what he sees. He wants to stop the death he feels coming but doesn't always know how. Rya is an interesting character, even more so once you understand her backstory.

There are two parts to the book. The first part ends with a twist that really shocked me. The plot moved along quickly and there was a lot of excitement. There were more than a few times that I stayed up late reading this one.

I read this for Booklikes-opoly - Paradise Pier 31.

Cute Chapter Book for Kids

Review:

Night of the Living Worms: A Speed Bump & Slingshot Misadventure - Dave Coverly, Dave Coverly

This is a cute book that kids are sure to love. It is a 2017-18 Sunshine State Young Reader's Award (SSYRA) nominated book for grades 3-5. I'm sure even our most reluctant readers will read this one. We ask our students in grades 4 and 5 to read at least three nominated books each year. Then they are able to vote for their favorite.

Art brings hope, even in war...

Review:

Amina: Through My Eyes - Lyn White, J.L. Powers

The debris was her canvas, the detritus of war her personal collection of art materials. And the itch in her fingertips drove her to keep creating, no matter how dangerous it was to do it.

- Chapter 1

She wanted both freedom and safety but she knew that was impossible.

- Chapter 1

Sometimes she forgot the fear, but when she remembered, it was worse than if she'd never forgotten. Because what kind of person could forget that you were living in the middle of a warzone?

- Chapter 8

Amina is 14-years old and she lives in Mogadishu. Her home has been damaged in the war. When her father is arrested and her brother is kidnapped by rebel forces, she is left to provide for her pregnant mother and ailing grandmother.

Amina is a brave girl who feels vulnerable and abandoned. She creates street art to help deal with her feelings and also to encourage people to feel hopeful. I liked Amina's character a lot. She tries her best to be strong, but she is also vulnerable. The story ends on a note of hope even though there is also sadness.

This book is part of the Through My Eyes series that chronicles the lives of children caught up in contemporary conflicts. The themes of courage, determination, and perseverance appear throughout the series. I think young people will enjoy this series and it could help promote empathy and cross-cultural understanding.

Amina isn't preachy, and it gave me an understanding of the conflict in Somalia that I never had before.
