Hunting Fear

This was my head start read. I was so excited that I finished it before the week even ended. I read it for the Murder Most Foul square.

 

This is an exciting crime thriller with detectives that have psychic abilities. The plot had some unexpected twists and left the killer's identity hidden until near the end of the book. The methods of killing are particularly gruesome and frightening, including a timed guillotine, drowning in a tank that fills slowly and being buried alive.

 

This is the first in a series of books with the Special Crimes Unit (a special group within the FBI of detectives with psychic abilities). It seems like each book follows a different special agent.

Red: The True Story of Red Riding Hood

Review:

Audience: Upper Elementary/Middle School

 

The first time I tried my hand at magic, I grew roses out of my nose.

Red's granny is sick (maybe dying) and she is determined to find a way to save her. She sets off on an adventure that brings understanding, knowledge, fear, excitement and even unexpected friendships.

 

Other books in this series include Rump, Jack, and Grump. They all come from the same world, but see it from different perspectives.

 

I thoroughly enjoyed this series so far. I haven't read Grump, but I'm sure it won't disappoint. Red is a great character though a bit naive and sheltered. She learns a great deal during her adventure and grows into a stronger person. 

 

Bottom line: A fresh take on the story of Red Riding Hood that will take you on an exciting adventure filled with danger and unexpected friendships.

Invictus - audiobook

Review:

Audience: Young Adult

 

Farway is part of a crack team that travels back in time to liberate priceless artifacts before they are destroyed or lost to disaster. On an expedition to the Titanic, another time traveler (Eliot) takes the piece they were there to retrieve. Eliot says all she wants is to be part of their team, but can they trust her?

 

I loved this book. The characters are likable and relatable, including typical human flaws. The world-building is fantastic, both the future time and the pasts they travel to. The twist at the end is surprising, but not completely unexpected. 

 

The narration is very well done. I never wanted to stop listening.

 

Recommended to: Fans of sci-fi stories with non-stop action and snarky humor.

The is an epic story with rebels, space battles, prison breaks, and last-minute rescues. The themes include loyalty, love, environmental destruction, and what it means to be alive.

 

I was captivated by the story and the narration was excellent. I often listened late into the night because I couldn't put it down. 

 

Recommended to: Fans of The Lunar Chronicles and epic sci-fi adventure stories.
